Marilyn 'Marty' Van Voorhis Wendler was born on July 29, 1932. She grew up in the town of Washington Court House, Ohio.

She graduated from Washington Senior High School in 1950 and studied at Ohio State University.

Marilyn married Peter Wiant Wendler (Garden Wall Niche 28C) in 1954. Their children are Laura Schneider, Melissa Steinecker, and Andrew Wendler.

Marty and her husband have been residents of Maumee, Ohio and members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee since 1959. She became the official historian for the City of Maumee and its St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Marty studied History at The University of Toledo receiving a Master of Arts and partial Doctorate Degree.

She was a History Instructor at University of Toledo from 1976 to 1990. She served as Curator, Director, and Executive Director of the Maumee Valley Historical Society from 1990 until 2000, then Curator of the Wolcott House Museum from 2004 until 2014, and finally as its curator emerita.

Marty received the 2021 'Women in American History Award' from the 'Daughters of the American Revolution'.

She authored numerous articles and books on local Maumee, Ohio history and architecture.
