Educator

Cynthia X. Beekley was born on August 29, 1940 to Marie Anthony and George Xanthopoulos. She grew up in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Her siblings are Harry Xanthopoulos and Georgia Vareldzis.

Cynthia has a Bachelor’s degree in Education - Mathematics and English from the Pennsylvania State University, a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Kansas State University, and she attended University of Michigan from 1988 until 1994, receiving a Doctorate in Education - Curriculum and Teaching. Her areas of study include gender, religion in schools, diversity, mindfulness, and leadership.

In her youth, Cynthia volunteered at her church and was candy striper at a local Pottstown hospital. She was a teacher in a Pennsylvanian Amish community for 12 years.

Cynthia married David Carl Beekley (East Garden Plaque Plate 08-01) on June 16, 1962. Their sons are Matthew Beekley and Alec Beekley.

Cynthia has 35 years of Educational experience: English Teacher at Maumee then Springfield High School, High School Principal, School Superintendent in K-12 education, and 7 years in higher education administration.

Cynthia was Superintendent of the Springfield Local School District from 1999 until 2008. She has been an Assistant Professor at University of Toledo since 2008.

Cynthia volunteered at Moble Meals delivering monthly meals to a dozen people in Holland/Springfield Township. She became the President of the Mobile Meals of Toledo Board.

Mays and Associates

Cynthia was an Ohio Reads volunteer and helped create the Springfield Holland Assets Partnership for Excellence (SHAPE). She's a board member of Junior Achievement, Lucas County Mental Health and Recovery Services, and SHAPE.

Cynthia has numerous publications, has served on over twenty boards, and has received recognitions such as National Merit Scholar, Mortar Board, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, YWCA Tribute to Women Award, Ohio Leadership Award, Equality Toledo Award, and the Lucas County Leadership in Prevention Award.

Toledo Art Museum

Cynthia is a member and benifactor of the Toledo Art Museum. She is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, Ohio and was involved with Paul's Peers Respite Care for the elderly.

She and her huband established the David and Cynthia Beekley Scholarship Fund at the University of Toledo Foundation.
