James Jay Secor II was born on February 24, 1899 in Toledo, Ohio to Mary Young (Barnes) Suydam and Jay Ketcham Secor Sr. His siblings are Virginia 'Diddy' Stranahan and Jay Ketchum Secor, Jr.
He attended Warren School in Toledo, Ohio and Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut.
James served in the United States Army in France during World War I as a Second Lieutenant.
He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1920. He had played college baseball.
James married Pauline (Phelps) Secor. Their children are Paula Paterson and James J. Secor, Jr.
In 1920, he joined the Bell and Beckwith stock brokerage firm in Toledo, Ohio. His father, Jay Secor, co-founded the firm. He became a partner in the firm in 1927.
James was a proficient golfer. He was on the Board of Governors of the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. He was instrumental in bringing the United States Open Golf Tournament to Inverness in 1957. He was chairman of the event.
He was a hunter and a fisherman making regular trips to Scotland to shoot grouse.
James died at the Henry Ford Hospital on July 24, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan.
