Raymond 'Ray' Philip Greene was born on Thursday, January 16, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. His sister is Marjorie Peters. He was raised and worked in Toledo, Ohio. He learned to sail in Traverse City, Michigan and became an accomlished sailor. He built his first boat at the age of twelve.
He obtained two Engineering Degrees from Ohio State University.
During World War II, Ray was the chief inspector of the shipyard at Terminal Island in Long Beach, California as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Navy.
Ray married Joanne Jorgensen on October 27, 1945. Their children are Kathleen Jan Greene, Kristina Louise Greene Kauffman, and Raymond Karl Lance Greene.
He ran the 'Ray Greene and Company' boat builders on Byrne Road in Toledo. Ray and his company introduced the sixteen foot fiberglass sailing sloop, 'Rebel', in 1948. This was one of the first small fiber-glass sailboats destined to replace previously popular but expensive wooden sailboats, making sailing more affordable.
Ray built aviation rescue boats for the United States Navy. He built airboats for the Toledo Area Sanitation District for marsh mosquito spraying. During the Vietnam War, Ray taught the South Vietnamese to build aviation rescue boats.
Ray died at home on Friday, January 19, 2001 in Indianapolis, Indianna.
