Spangler Candy Executive
Charles Boyer Spangler was born on March 12, 1911 in Bryan, Ohio to Edith Talbot Spangler (01-01)* and Ernest Dayton Spangler (02-01). His twin brother is Thomas Spangler. His other younger brothers are Norman Ernest Spangler, Albert T. Spangler (05-01), and Frank Talbot Spangler.
Charles graduated from Bryan High School in 1929. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1933.
Charles married Martha Janet (Gregory) Spangler (04-01) in 1936. Their children are C. Gregory Spangler and Barbara Fredericks.
Charles was the General Manager at Spangler Candy and Tobacco Distribution in Toledo, Ohio from 1935 through 1960. Then he became Spangler Candy Company's Vice President of the Credit and Shipping Departments in Bryan, Ohio until he retired in 1976. He was then on Spangler Candy Company's Board of Directors for 6 years.
During his time at Spangler Candy, Charles was part the Spangler family team, including his younger brother Albert, taking the company from a regional chocolate maker to a national manufacturer of lollipops and candy canes.
He was a member Orchid Hills Country Club in Bryan, Ohio.
Charles was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, Ohio serving on the Vestry. Later, he was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bryan, Ohio.
Charles played basketball and tennis in high school. He competed in tennis at the Ohio state level. He continued to play tennis in college and later. He enjoyed all sports.
After retiring, he and his wife traveled extensively, mainly to Europe but also to Central and South America.
Charles died at Parkview Hospital on February 6, 2002 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
