Ernest's older brother, Arthur Spangler, founded the family managed and owned 'Spangler Manufacturing Company' in Defiance, Ohio in 1906, making only baking products. Ernest, a Toledo candy jobber, joined the company in 1908, becoming a co-founder and starting its transition to the 'Spangler Candy Company' in 1920.

The company moved from Defiance to Bryan, Ohio in 1913. Thus Bryan became 'The Candy Cane Capital of the World'. Spangler Candy Company with a branch in Toledo, Ohio, produces over one hundred million candy canes and lollipops annually.
Ernest was president of the Boards of Education of Bryon, Ohio in the mid 1920's and of Maumee, Ohio in the early 1950's.
He was member of the Bryan, Ohio Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for 50 years.
Ernest was founder and charter member of the Orchid Hills Country Club in Bryan, Ohio. He was a member of Toledo Club and the National Candy Association.
Ernest was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, Ohio, serving on the Vestry in 1933 and as its Senior Warden. 1
Ernest died at home on February 3, 1975 in Maumee, Ohio.
