Alice Elizabeth (Metcalf) Spaulding, age 93, of Toledo, OH, died October 30, 2003.
She was born in Columbus, OH, on January 24, 1910. Alice grew up in Cleveland, OH. She was the youngest daughter of the late Clarence S. and Alice Bottman Metcalf and sister to Margaret Sykora and Frances McDowell, who preceded her in death.
Alice and her husband, the late David C. Spaulding Jr., were married in Cleveland in 1934, and moved to the Toledo area in 1939, when David began working for Bunting Brass and Bronze as a mechanical engineer. David died in 1968.
Alice came from a musical family. She was a graduate of Flora Stone Mather College in Cleveland, and held a master's degree in music theory. Alice's father was head of the Cleveland Public Library in the 1940's, and composed music, including an opera that was performed in Cleveland in the 1950's. Her mother, who deeply appreciated classical music, belonged to music appreciation groups in the Cleveland area. Her sister, Frances, was a concert pianist, and her sister, Margaret, was a fine musician as well. Alice composed music, was an accomplished pianist and played the organ, occasionally substituting at the organ during services at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, OH.
Alice was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church for nearly 50 years. She was a member of PPSEWA, ASME Auxiliary, garden clubs and was president at one time or another of many of the organizations to which she belonged.
David and Alice were a Toledo "flying family" in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Alice took flying lessons so that she could co-pilot for her husband when they took short and longer trips in their airplane. In 1949, she, her husband, and their two children flew to California and back in a Bellanca Cruiser airplane.
Alice was a housewife and mother of four and became a teacher, then a children's librarian, after her children were grown. She was an expert seamstress. She was a guide at Wolcott House. She and her husband held season tickets for the Toledo Symphony during most of it's existence, as well as the Toledo Repertoire Theatre and the Toledo Opera Society.
Alice lived in South Toledo in the same home for 53 years, before moving to Foundation Park Care Center in 1995.
She passed on her love and knowledge of music and books to all of her children. Surviving are her daughters, Mary Lynn Spaulding, Colorado Springs, CO, JoAnna S. Umlauf, Waterville, OH, Betsey Jane DaSilva, Brisbane, CA, and her son, David C. Spaulding (BJ), Spring Hills, FL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Maison-Dardenne Funeral Home in Maumee, OH. A memorial service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church is planned at a date to be announced. Interment will be private. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, OH, the Alzheimer's Association, Foundation Park Care Center.
Her family and friends express appreciation for the loving care given to her by the staff of Foundation Park Care Center.
We are gathered together for a vigil. Let those who wish to be here, but are not able, be with us now through our mutual affection and love.
In our vigil we are not waiting for Alice, but for ourselves to catch up with Alice on her final voyage which she is already enjoying. Perhaps we may catch a glimpse of her.
Your thanks for my Lay Eucharistic Visits to Alice are appreciated. However, focus on me must be minimized so as to not lessen the greater gift of the true Holy Communion of our Lord and His whole Church that I sought for Alice.
Alice demonstrated a great love for our Lord Jesus Christ, His Church, Holy Scripture, the Episcopal Liturgy, the Hymns, and Religious Art. During the Holy Communion services she showed a child-like exuberant joy and thankfulness. Alice received the Body and Blood of our dear Lord so sincerely and fully that when her difficulties culminated, she was still able to receive the Holy Elements.
Alice remained trusting and open to those around her and reflected a concern and care for others. Alice allowed others to care for and minister to her. In turn, Alice ministered to others, including me, even as her difficulties increased.
The expressed love of Alice's family and friends made Alice more lovable to those directly caring for her.
We are assured that Alice is in Heaven for our love of Alice can not conceive of a Heaven without her.
Much of the liturgy and scripture of the following worship service would have been heard during my Lay Eucharistic Visits with Alice.
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever.
Amen.
Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets
are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that
we may perfectly love thee, and worthly magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Let Love be with us now to bring us peace through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
The Lesson for the Day is a reading from St. Paul's Letter to the Church in Rome
(Romans 8:14-19, 34-35, 37-39)
-The Glory That Shall Be Revealed-
All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation awaits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God.
Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.
Who is to separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or perial, or sword?
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.
The Psalm for the Day is Psalm 23.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me:
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou prparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head wih oil:
My cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
for ever.
Amen.
To all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to us here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, we may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives.
Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty.
And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord,
to comfort and succor all those who, in this
transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any
other adversity.
Amen.
Dear Friends: It was our Lord Jesus himself who said, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give your rest." Let us pray, then, for our sister Alice, that she may rest from her labors, and enter into the light of God's eternal sabbath rest.
Receive, O Lord, your servant, for she returns to you.
Into your hands, O Lord,
we commend our sister Alice.
Wash her in the holy font of everlasting life, and clothe
her in her heavenly wedding garment.
Into your hands, O Lord,
we commend our sister Alice.
May she hear your words of invitation, "Come, you blessed of
my Father."
Into your hands, O Lord,
we commend our sister Alice.
May she gaze upon you, Lord, face to face, and taste the
blessedness of perfect rest.
Into your hands, O Lord,
we commend our sister Alice.
May angels surround her, and saints welcome her in peace.
Into your hands, O Lord,
we commend our sister Alice.
Almighty God, our Father in heaven, before whom live all
who die in the Lord: Receive our sister Alice into the courts of
your heavenly dwelling place. Let her heart and soul now ring
out in joy to you, O Lord, the living God, and the God of
those who live. This we ask through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep
our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of
God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be
amongst us, and remain with us always.
Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
